Welded black pipes for pressure installations EN10255 and EN10217-1

Welded black pipes for pressure installations EN10255 and EN10217-1

GREEN STAL has permanently at the Bucharest Warehouse 10,000-15,000 tons of longitudinally welded steel pipes (black and galvanized) compatible with the distribution of liquids under pressure at room temperature.

The welded steel pipes for installations that we have at the Bucharest Warehouse are produced according to European standards EN10255 (medium and light series) and EN10217/1.

Production standards – pressurized liquid distribution at ambient temperature
EN10255 and EN10217-1

EN10255+A1 S195T Welded steel pipes for pressure purposes. Non-alloy steel pipes for welding and threading. Intended uses: Distribution of aqueous liquids and gases

Basically, longitudinally welded steel pipes produced according to EN10255 can be used:

  • A. In gas transport/distribution/storage installations for the supply of heating/cooling systems, starting from the external storage reservoir or the last pressure reduction unit of the boiler/heater/chiller system(s) of the building(s)
  • B. In installations for the transportation/distribution/storage of water not intended for human consumption

EN10255 compliant steel is S195T.

This steel is classified as non-alloy quality steel according to EN 10020.

EN10217-1 P235TR1 Welded steel pipes for pressure purposes. Pipes of non-alloy steel, welded electrically by pressure in line and by flux-cored arc welding with specified characteristics at ambient temperature. Distribution of aqueous liquids.

Steels compatible with EN10217-1 are listed in the tables below:

Chemical composition (casting analysis) in % by mass

Mechanical properties

Up to the external diameter of 165.1mm the pipes are produced according to the standard EN10255 (usual walls), after this diameter starting with 168.3mm the pipes are produced according to the standard EN10217/1.

Also, very thin pipes are produced according to EN10217-1 (so, we can have very thin pipes in the range 21.3-323.9, which are not produced according to EN10255, but are produced according to EN10217-1).

The welded black pipes EN10255 and EN10217-1 are not used for drinking water.

Purpose and scope

EN10255 – Distribution of aqueous liquids and gases under pressure at room temperature.
EN10217-1 – Distribution of aqueous liquids at room temperature.

Pipe dimensions (see link)

  • Outer diameter: 21.3mm-323.9mm;
  • Wall thickness: 2.00-12.7mm;
  • Bar length: usually 6.00mm (+/-50mm);

Pipe durability: depending on the temperature, pressure and fluids used – this decision will be made by the engineer. Obviously, the wall thickness and the environment where the pipe is installed play a key role.

Pipe finishes (pipe ends)

  • Flat heads (chamfered or straight cut);
  • Plug and threaded ends;
  • Grooved ends (prefabricated in the factory or at the Green Stal Warehouse) compatible for use with 100tong, Victaulic, Tyco etc. quick couplings.

Quality certificates

All pipes delivered by Green Stal are accompanied by a Quality Certificate (MTC-MILL TEST CERTIFICATE) issued by the manufacturer and a Declaration of Conformity issued by Green Stal;

Galvanizing standard – EN10240

Leak tightness for pipes produced according to EN10255

All pipes shall be leak tight. Leak tightness shall be demonstrated by hydrostatic test or electromagnetic test. At the manufacturer’s choice, the test can be either a hydrostatic test at minimum 50bar for at least 5s, with no obvious leakage, or an electromagnetic test according to EN10246-1.

Leak tightness for pipes produced according to EN10217-1

All pipes must be leak tight. Leak tightness shall be demonstrated by hydrostatic testing or electromagnetic testing. The test can be either a hydrostatic test or an electromagnetic test according to EN ISO 10893-1.

Handling and storage techniques at construction sites / warehouses

Black pipes must be handled with great care (only with forklifts that can handle heavy weights, cranes, etc.), as they are very heavy and any mishandling can cause serious personal injury. Also, if strong blows are applied to the pipes, if a bar falls from a distance of more than 1 meter, if a pipe tie falls from heights greater than 20cm on one of the bars located on the hexagonal edges of the tie, the pipe may lose its mechanical properties and especially leaks may occur on the weld of the pipe.

Black pipes should not be stored in damp environments, in environments with basic or acidic substances, mortar, cement water, cement, lime, etc.

Black and galvanized pipes should not be in direct contact with the ground, also in damp, sandy, concrete, cement, marble etc. environments the pipes should be covered with a polyethylene tarpaulin.
